The career

If you are considering a career in speech and language therapy – congratulations on a good choice!

To find out if this really could be the profession for you, start with the careers booklet from the UK professional body, the Royal College of Speech & Language Therapists.

Next, have a look at Australian speech pathologist Caroline Bowen’s answers to the questions that prospective students frequently ask.

If you are seriously interested, the book ‘A Career in Speech and Language Therapy’ by Jannet A. Wright and Myra Kersner has been very positively reviewed in Speech & Language Therapy in Practice.

Editor Avril Nicoll was one of the panel answering questions at a Guardian Live Q&A session 'Breaking into speech and language therapy' on 3 February 2010.

Succession planning was also the theme of a feature article in the Autumn 2006 issue of Speech & Language Therapy in Practice magazine.

Speech and language therapy is a relatively young profession; the UK professional body celebrated its Golden Jubilee in 1995. For a historical perspective, read this 1995 article where six therapists  discuss their experience of the profession and their hopes for the future.

We are happy to supply prospective speech and language therapy students with a sample copy of the magazine on request - and look forward to welcoming you as subscribers in due course.
